Punjab Government Introduces New Waste Tax Under Clean Punjab Campaign

The Punjab government has introduced a new “Clean Punjab” waste tax, aimed at improving sanitation and waste management across the province. This tax has already been approved by the provincial cabinet and is being applied first in posh residential areas and commercial markets.

Tax on Residential Houses

The new system sets different charges based on the size of houses:

  • 5 Marla houses in cities will pay Rs. 300, while in villages the amount is Rs. 200.
  • 5–10 Marla houses in cities will pay Rs. 500.
  • 10 Marla to 1 Kanal houses in cities will be charged Rs. 1,000.
  • Large houses above 1 Kanal will pay Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 5,000, depending on size.
  • In villages, homes above 10 Marla will be charged Rs. 200–400.

This structure means larger homes will contribute more towards waste management compared to smaller ones.

Tax on Shops and Businesses

Commercial properties will also be taxed:

  • Small shops in cities: Rs. 500, while in villages Rs. 300.
  • Medium-sized shops: Rs. 1,000 in cities and Rs. 700 in villages.
  • Business centers: Rs. 3,000 in cities and Rs. 2,000 in villages.

This step ensures that businesses, which generate more waste, also play their part in maintaining cleanliness.

Bill Distribution and Collection

The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has already started sending out tax bills. Their revenue and operational teams will handle both the distribution and collection of this waste tax.

Why This Tax Matters

According to the government, this initiative is part of the “Clean Punjab” campaign. The goal is to raise funds for better garbage collection, disposal, and recycling systems. Officials believe that without such measures, it will be difficult to keep cities and villages clean as populations grow.

Final Words

The new waste tax will impact both families and businesses in Punjab. While some may view it as an extra financial burden, the government argues it is necessary for cleaner streets, better sanitation, and a healthier environment. If implemented fairly, this tax could help make Punjab cleaner and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

  1. There is no mention of tax details regarding:
    1. Will it be applicable on monthly basis?
    2. What about the cooperative societies or town which have their own arrangements for collection and disposal

  2. It opens a way for corruption.no one swm will clean gutters and naali they pick up only shoppers from streets and roads.cleanliness not seen in cities.

  3. A new way of corruption unlocked. They first started leaving road and garbage unpicked so ppl realise what could happen
The workers who are already paid by government mostly demand money from house owner for picking garbage. Secondly worse situation of sewerage no one cleans it.

  4. This general healthcare initiative is praiseworthy. It’s tech name should be Garbage Disposal Cess (GSC). Tax term means a larger imposition.
