Punjab Closes Schools on Tiny Plots — New Rule in 2025
The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has issued a new order: any school built on land smaller than 10 marlas must either move to a larger site or expand to meet that size.
Deadline & What Must Be Done
- School owners must comply by November 10, 2025.
- If expansion isn’t possible, they must relocate and notify PEF authorities.
- PEF will inspect the premises to make sure they meet the requirement before giving formal approval.
What Happens If They Don’t Comply?
Schools that fail to follow this order risk:
- Losing registration or approval from PEF
- Legal action or forced closure
Why This Rule?
PEF says the move aims to improve the learning environment. Small plots often mean cramped rooms, lack of playgrounds or labs, poor ventilation, or safety issues.
With more space, schools can provide:
- Safer classrooms
- Proper facilities (labs, toilets, corridors)
- Room for expansion and growth
Which Schools Are Affected?
- Private schools registered with PEF on plots under 10 marlas
- Schools in dense urban areas or converted buildings where expansion is hard
- Schools already on 10 marlas or more generally won’t be affected.
What School Owners Need to Do
- Check plot size — measure current land area.
- Decide — can you expand or must you relocate?
- Plan & document — prepare designs, land papers, structural plans.
- Inform PEF — submit your plan for expansion or moving.
- Get inspected — after changes, PEF officials will verify compliance.
- Receive approval — once you pass inspection, you’re allowed to continue.
