Public Holiday Announced in Pakistan for October Update: Check Updates

The government has officially announced a public holiday on October 8, 2025, to observe “Youm-e-Istehkam-o-Tajdeed-e-Ahd-e-Nau” — a national day dedicated to remembering the victims and survivors of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.

According to a notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), all government offices, educational institutions, and public departments will remain closed on Wednesday, October 8. The day will be marked to show solidarity with earthquake survivors and to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Remembering the 2005 Earthquake

On October 8, 2005, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck northern Pakistan and Kashmir. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history. The quake caused widespread destruction across Azad Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northern areas of Pakistan.

Entire towns were reduced to rubble — Bagh city was almost completely destroyed, while Muzaffarabad, Balakot, and Rawalakot also suffered heavy damage. Thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals collapsed, leaving millions homeless. According to official reports, over 73,000 people lost their lives, including many schoolchildren, and more than 3 million were displaced.

The tragedy left a deep mark on the nation’s history. Every year since then, the day has been observed to honor the victims and recognize the resilience of survivors who rebuilt their lives from the ruins.

Events and Activities on October 8

Across Azad Kashmir and other regions of Pakistan, memorial events, prayer ceremonies, and public gatherings will be held to remember the lives lost in the 2005 earthquake. Government officials, rescue workers, and community leaders will attend these events to express unity and support for the affected families.

Citizens will also hold private prayers and remembrance events for their loved ones. Media channels are expected to air special documentaries and reports highlighting the stories of courage, recovery, and rebuilding after the disaster.

Purpose of the Holiday

The purpose of the public holiday is not only to mourn the losses but also to renew the nation’s commitment to preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. It serves as a reminder of the importance of strong infrastructure, safety training, and community cooperation during emergencies.

The government has urged people to use the day to pray for the departed souls, appreciate the efforts of rescue teams, and stand in solidarity with families still affected by the 2005 tragedy.
