Govt to Block 4.9 Million SIMs Linked with Expired CNICs – Renew Your ID to Stay Safe
The government of Pakistan has started a big action against mobile SIMs linked with expired or invalid CNICs (identity cards). According to the plan, more than 4.9 million SIM cards will be blocked step by step. This decision was made after NADRA and the Ministry of Interior advised the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take action.
Why is this action taken?
Many SIMs in Pakistan are still active even though they are registered with old, expired, cancelled, or dead people’s CNICs. Such SIMs can be misused for crime or fraud. The government wants to make sure that only people with valid CNICs use SIM cards. This step will improve national security and stop the misuse of mobile numbers.
Blocking Schedule
| CNIC Expiry Year | SIMs Blocked By |
|---|---|
| 2017 or earlier | June 30, 2025 |
| 2018 | July 31, 2025 |
| 2019 | August 31, 2025 |
| 2020 | September 30, 2025 |
| 2021 | October 31, 2025 |
| 2022 | November 30, 2025 |
| 2023–2025 | December 31, 2025 |
The first phase already started on June 30, 2025. The last phase will be completed by December 31, 2025.
What should users do?
If your CNIC is expired, you must renew it from NADRA quickly. After that, contact your mobile service provider and update your information. If you don’t update, your SIM will stop working and you may permanently lose your number.
Why this is important
- It will stop fake SIM usage.
- It will protect people from fraud.
- It will improve record keeping and make networks safer.
- It will ensure that every SIM is linked to a valid CNIC holder.
Final Words
This is one of the largest SIM blocking operations in Pakistan. Millions of users may lose their mobile service if they don’t renew their CNIC on time. To stay safe and connected, all citizens should check their CNIC expiry date, renew it, and update with their mobile company.
